Description

Solar cells are easy to understand with our model!

Solar cells (or photovoltaic cells) collect light and turn it into electricity. They are used in solar panels that capture energy in solar farms and even power spacecraft! Your students will learn how solar cells work with our model.

Your class first make their paper models of a solar cell. They will see how silicon, boron and phosphorus are used to create two different semiconductor layers (N-type and P-type). They will also see how the atoms are arranged into a lattice.

They then use their models to see how the P-type silicon layer produces electrons when its' atoms are struck by photons. They see how these electrons leave holes that are filled by other electrons. This movement of electrons creates a flow through a circuit generating direct current (DC) electricity.
