** NB: the acrylic voltameter needs to be washed after each use to remove any traces of the weak acid used in the electrolyis process.

Please wear appropriate PPE when preparing & filling with acid solution as well as for cleaning.

# Making your electrolyte #

Pure water is a very good insulator so electricity does not flow through it. Normal tap water contains dissolved gases and minerals which make it slightly conductive but it is not sufficiently conductive for use in a Voltameter. One of the better ways to increase the conductivity is to add sulphuric acid to the water to make a 5% to 7% solution.

Note: when diluting acids, always add the acid to the water and never add the water to the acid.

Add approx. 200ml of normal tap water to a 500ml or 1lt beaker. While wearing PPE, add about 14ml of concentrated sulphuric acid to make a weak acid solution so that it can conduct electric current.
